"Those entrusted with the stewardship of policies and procedures, serve the school's highest purposes by working in harmony with the statement and the spirit of our school's mission and goals." 

Our school is a non-profit Corporation with the corporate name The Grumman Hill Montessori Association, Inc. and, as such, is governed by a Board of Trustees.  Trustees play a vital role in planning and overseeing the long-term strategic and financial well-being of our school. As stated in the Parent Handbook:

“The Board of Trustees serves as custodian of the fiscal viability of the school, holding in trust the school’s future as well as its present. The Board represents continuity and permanent responsibility as the policy making body of the school. It is responsible for effective implementation of school policies and for the school’s fiscal well-being.”

The Board also serves as the guardian of the school’s mission.  It is the Board’s responsibility to ensure that the mission is relevant and vital to the community it serves and to monitor the success of the school in fulfilling its mission.  The Board pursues broad strategic issues and exercises general oversight of the activities, property and affairs that affect the Corporation.   The Board delegates the day-to-day responsibilities for the school to the Head of School.

As set forth by our Bylaws, Trustees shall endeavor to understand Montessori philosophy, principles and practices and shall maintain an awareness of activities of the Corporation and of staff, school and parent functions.  There shall be no fewer than 12 or more than 22 voting Trustees on the Board, including the current Parent Association Co-Chairs. In addition, the Head of School and the Business Manager currently serve as ex-officio non-voting Trustees.

As a member of our school, our members vote to elect Trustees.   Our members include each parent or guardian, all staff of the School and all Trustees.  The election is held in May of each year when approximately 1/3 of the Trustees are elected by members to serve a three-year term. 

The Annual Meeting of the Corporation is an important opportunity for members to hear directly from Trustees about developments over the past year at our school.  It is the sincere hope of the Trustees that members make every effort to attend to learn about the work being done on behalf of our school by the Board.
